There are so many options available in the market that make the decision process more difficult than it needs to be. That's where a professional system installer can help guide the process.

The first decision will generally be wired or wireless in terms of surveillance systems. While other factors affect the choice of video surveillance system, this decision can simplify the other choices.

For most home and office installations wireless can be a much simpler installation process with the least amount of intrusive work that running cables entails.

For retail and warehouse installations, a wired system is usually a preferred option. As with all decisions, there are several factors to consider.

Advantages of wired vs. wireless

  1. Signal unaffected by other devices
  2. Allows more sensors than wireless
  3. Does not need network extenders
  4. More difficult to disable
  5. Allows superior privacy
  6. Does not necessarily affect bandwidth
  7. Secure against remote hacking
  8. No camera batteries to replace

Wireless Security Camera Advantages

  1. Ease of installation
  2. Less expensive upfront costs
  3. Cameras can be relocated
  4. Additional cloud storage options
  5. More likely to work with home automation software

Wired Systems Considerations

  1. More time consuming and costly installation
  2. Best suited for new construction
  3. Wires may get damaged or deteriorate over time
  4. Cables need to be installed to each camera
  5. Cost of cables can be expensive

Wireless Systems Considerations

  1. Requires significant bandwidth
  2. Requires power for each camera
  3. Other signals can interfere with security cameras
  4. Connection and configuration can be complicated
  5. Vulnerable to remote hacking and power outages
  6. Replacement of a network router or hub can require reconfiguration of all cameras.

Where security is the most important aspect of the system we tend to recommend a wired security camera system, whether system is attached to a XVR or NVR recorder.

Wireless systems still require power for each camera whether that is from a nearby power outlet or from a remote power supply but can be the best option preferred where running cables may not be feasible and where cost is a key factor.
